STONE TILES - TERRACOTTA

Terracotta Tiles

Sometimes the imprint of a hand is fired into the surface of a tile where it is given a final flattening by the tile maker.

There is no extra charge for these occasional signed originals. Our handmade terracotta originates from where the ancient crafts of producing consistently fine quality roof and floor tiles has been perfected over centuries. At the start of the process, clays are taken from the earth and physical and chemical impurities removed. The resulting balls of clay are shaped and cast individually into frames where they are left to dry in the sun before firing. Look at the bottom of a tile and you will see the marks of the sand bed.

Navarra is the sun-baked region of north-easter Spain, where the rolling hills of red clay soild remind us that terra cotta is baked earth. This extruded variety is pale reddish-brown, resulting in a warm but subtle effect.
